Why Blog?

Why Blog?

From as early as I remember, I wanted to be a writer.

There were some interim phases that included archaeologist, gymnast, choreographer, flautist, and sound technician, but mostly these didn’t come to fruition.

I started writing “novels” as early as 3rd grade. First handwritten, then on a typewriter/word processor I got for Christmas (a HUGE upgrade before the age of technology as we know it now!), then in WordPerfect on our family computer.

It’s been a while. In case you can’t recall or have never seen one, this is a typewriter:

and this is an early word processor/electric display typewriter:

I never managed to finish one of those novels, but I wrote short stories at a summer camp workshop and relished creative writing assignments at school – and mostly got great feedback.

As the internet evolved, my second love became web technology. I built extra credit web sites for school and dabbled in early versions of HTML and JavaScript on my Geocities site. (RIP)

Around the same time, a teacher I respected very much told me I would never amount to anything more than a “B writer”.

(Looking back today, I’m not sure why I listened to him, or, for that matter, why I thought being a “B writer” would be such a bad thing!)

Enter Reality

That feedback proved to me at the time that I should go all in on technology, and I did. I studied Computer Science and Math at NYU (go Violets!), and I’ve had a great career in tech so far. (though mostly not in web development…)

I’ve also had the chance to write some pretty thorough product specifications and technical documentation. (though mostly not fiction…)

I’ve also had the chance to live in 5 great states, start raising 2 great daughters, and marry 1 great guy. (not in that order!)

And here I am in my mid- (ahem) -30s, with the itch to tinker with writing and webby stuff again. Maybe looking for a chance to help others, offer inspiration, or simply entertain (or just entertain myself, as is most likely). I’ll share tales of our moving and travel adventures, fun in the kitchen, and whatever else comes along.

Getting to the Point

A blog fits those two early passions for me – writing and web site building. Hopefully there’s something here for you, too.
